Early Season Wrap-up and Outlook

03/14/10
The Boy's Varsity CapsLax team is two weeks into the season and the record sits at 1 win, 3 losses. That record, however, is deceiving. All three losses have come against ranked, unbeaten opponents—Cardinal Gibbons, Holly Springs, and East Chapel Hill, respectively. After a rain postponement against Wakefield, Cardinal Gibbons became the first game of the season. In the new state conference realignment, Cardinal Gibbons is now in the same lacrosse conference as Broughton. This season Gibbons returns at least three All State players from a team that lost in the state championship game year season by only one goal. The CapsLax program earned respect that evening losing in a closely contested contest by a tight 2 goal margin, final score 8 - 6. The second game of the season, on Tuesday, 03/03, was a double overtime thrilling victory by Holly Springs, another undefeated team that made it deep into the state playoffs last season. Holly Springs features a bevy of good, solid players including one All American and a strong face-off man. Broughton clearly out-played Holly Springs early in the game, leading by an impressive 7-1 score at halftime. Holly Springs' coaching staff obviously made some corrections at halftime for the second half was noticeably a different game. Broughton struggled to both gain and subsequently maintain possession throughout the second half. Holly Springs scored 3 very quick goals to start the second half putting themselves back into contention. Slowly they whittled away at the difference, tying the game in the final minute of play sending it into overtime. In both overtimes it was either team's game to win. Each team traded good shots on goal, however Holly Springs scored the golden goal in the second overtime.
Broughton's first win of the season came last Friday night against an overmatched conference opponent, Southeast Raleigh. Broughton won easily 17 – 0. The game's outcome appeared decided early into the contest, so everyone got a chance to play. Senior Wills Barber had a career best 7 point game (4 goals, 3 assists). The following night, Broughton lost 13-5 against a very physical, talented opponent, East Chapel Hill, another ranked, undefeated team that made it deep into the playoffs last season. If there is any consolation, Broughton scored more points than any other team against what many believe to be the best defense in the state.
Looking ahead to this week's schedule, the CapsLax faces a conference opponent Garner, away on Tuesday, 3/16, at 6:00 PM. There is another tough road game @ 7:00 PM on Wednesday evening, 3/17, against Chapel Hill, another currently undefeated and ranked opponent that played in the state championship game last season. The CapsLax end the week's schedule at home on Friday, 3/19, @ 7:00 PM against Millbrook High School, a relatively new program moving from a club sport to its first year as a varsity program.

In closing, many believe Broughton has the toughest out of conference schedule in the area. This team could well be the best 1-3 team in the state at this point early into the season based simply on the strength of schedule. Despite its current record, this year's team is clearly competitive against the Triangle area's best and most established boy's lacrosse programs. This year's team appears to be the strongest team in the 7 year history of the program. This is a good team. They are fun to watch. Come see them play.
