Weekly Re-"Cap" (March 15-19, 2010)
by Caps Lax
03/21/10
This week ranks as perhaps the most successful in the history of the Broughton Boy's Varsity Lacrosse program. The team went 3 – 0 for the week, including a dramatic 7 vs. 6 OT win against previously unbeaten and ranked Chapel Hill, a team that played in the state championship game last season. M. Kidd scored the golden goal after creating a turnover in a man-down situation of the defensive end, running the length of the field, and shooting a long pole game winner in overtime, causing a jubilant rush by the entire team onto the field in a spontaneous mosh pit celebration. The victory ranks as the most significant in the history of the CapsLax program. Principal Mares was on hand to share in the joy, enthusiasm, and Caps Pride. Bookending the week were comfortable wins against Garner (14 vs. 2) and Millbrook (11 vs. 2).
The team showed great offensive balance this past week. Sixteen (16) players recorded either a goal or an assist lead by the three starting attack men (designated offensive players) who were evenly distributed in total points for the week. Several players recorded career highs in goals (A Kyner – 5 vs. Millbrook); assists (O Fleming – 3 vs. Garner; S. Creech – 4 vs. Garner); and, total points per game (A Kyner – 6 vs. Millbrook; S. Creech – 7 vs. Garner). The team recorded 17 assists on 31 goals for a 55% assists-to-goal ratio—a rock solid effort. Other players that contributed points the week included S. Cramer, H. Black, J. Burke, B. Turner, C. Robinson, D. Angell, T. Wicker, M. Kidd, A. Keravuori, C.L. Wilkins, M. Eades and W. Williams.
The defensive unit was solid throughout the week, also--creating turnovers, grabbing balls out of mid air, winning the ground balls, clearing consistently to the offensive end, fast transitions leading to assists, and anchored by strong goalie play.
